Rowdy Rathore

Rating: 1

June 01, 2012

Cast: Akshay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha, Nasser, Yashpal Sharma

Director: Prabhudeva

Rowdy Rathore is the kind of movie that’s made by people with a cash register in place of their brain. Because no legitimate reason, other than financial gain, can justify why this movie was made – it has no story or plot whatsoever, the characters are entirely forgettable, and it’s so long and loud and silly that the laughs dry up early on. That the film has such impressive pedigree – it’s produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, directed by Prabhudeva, and stars Akshay Kumar – is both baffling and shameful.

The premise is a familiar one: a small-time crook, Shiva (Akshay Kumar), feels obliged to step into the shoes of his doppelganger, a lookalike cop named Vikram Rathore, when the fearless officer dies trying to rescue a village from its despotic gang-lord.

Remade from a super-hit Telugu film, but with no attempt to tailor its aesthetics or its sensibility for a new audience, Rowdy Rathore is packed with brutal action scenes shot in slo-mo, low-brow humor, and regressive drama. The problem isn’t that the film is merely mindless, but that it revels in making you squirm uncomfortably. In one scene, after his wife has been kidnapped and raped by the villain’s son, a helpless police officer accompanied by his little kids begs for her release, only to watch the rapist tell his father that he isn’t done with the woman yet, and will return her to her husband in two days.

The heroine, and Shiva’s love interest, a buxom Sonakshi Sinha, seems to exist in this film only to have her midriff repeatedly pinched by Akshay Kumar, and he refers to her on at least three occasions as “mera maal”.

At 2 hours and 20 minutes, Rowdy Rathore is excruciatingly long. The one-liners have little impact and make no sense, and the action has a been-there-seen-that feel to it. A few jokes work because Akshay Kumar does goofy well, but this film doesn’t have half the energy of Prabhudeva’s last directorial outing in Hindi, the Salman Khan starrer Wanted.

Aside from a few moments of inspired lunacy from the film’s leading man – who can do this part in his sleep (and probably did!) – Rowdy Rathore comes off as nothing more than a cheap attempt to rob moviegoers of their money! I’d have bet Sanjay Leela Bhansali has no idea what he’s produced, except that the film’s outtakes reveal that he did in fact visit the set, and hence more than likely knew exactly what film he was making!

I’m going with a generous one out of five for Rowdy Rathore. Surely there’s a better way to spend a lazy weekend!

Its telugu version is called Vikramarkudu, which has been tailor made with its hero Ravi Teja in mind…So the hindi movie should have made changes that cater to bollywood.
Hindi film ‘Dhabbang’ was remade in Telugu n named ‘Gabbar Singh’ and had so many alterations to make it Hyderabadi which made it thoroughly enjoyable and a massive box office hit ,thats the way to do it.

  2. snehashis says:

Rajeev ,totally agreed with you, don’t care about these silly comments …keep the good work up,I still go to a theater after going thru ur reviews,I downloaded this movie, deserves less than 1 star…

  4. KIRAN KUMAR K says:

Rajeev, don’t give stereo-type rating’s and comment on the Movies.
Better you review and comment on your type of SRK Movies with 5*.
Just distinguish between Class and Mass Movies.
RR is complete MASS MASALA ENTERTAINER as per Block-Buster Hit Vikramarkudu is concerned.
I really bet RR will also do well @ BO and collect 100+ Crores @ BO.

  5. Tahera says:

I agree with Masand…the film is hopeless and is purely made for money.i went for bansali next time i will wait for the review before throwing my money.

  6. mr.a says:

    in a word pathetic

  7. Goodman says:

Rajeev why can’t you be little more fair in your review. I am a follower of your opinions but this is one of the movies I beg to differ. As you can see from above comments this movies belongs to the category of movies which defy logic by being liked by as many as who dislike them, for e.g. Dabaangg, singham etc. there is something as x factor I.e. masala in these movies which movie purists like you won’t comprehend. You should have given it 2 stars at least. Why should the overrated actors like shahrukh and salman have all the fun, let this overrated actor akshay also get some mileage, it is going to be his dabangg!.

  8. sanjib says:

  10. Shanghai says:

Masandji i follow you a lot.I wait for your review b4 watching any movie.& i didnt say RR til now .But my problem is i do say department movie(sorry without reading your review 😉 and i thought it was the worst movie made under big banner. But you have it 1and half start and this rr only a one.I dont think any movie could be worst than department. So im sure RR deserve atlist more than 1.5 stars..

  11. nikhil says:

Rowdy rathore was a pain in a** movie also its humor was cheap and its better to watch some flop tushar kapoor movie rather going to this one.
Rajeev your reviews are most perfect ones, and those people who dont agree can get LOST!!!!B-)

rajiv masand i follow you a lot. but your reveiw is become wrong from last some films for e.g you give a housfull2 1 star but cross 100 cr mark and entertain a public a lot.similar with rowdy rathore when you give a 1 star but still the public choose rowdy rathore and cross 70 cr mark in just 6 days.also entertain a public a lot.in comperssion you give a department a 1.5 star it is not at all a film which deserve more than a housfull 2 and rowdy rahtore !!!!!!!

  14. Hello Mr. Masand, I’m a fan of your writing and your movie review. I think you are a very intelligent movie analyst. I agree with some of your views in this review. But I have a problem with a lot of your views. You are a bit too critical of everything. It seems the purpose of this review as not to analyse the movie but to dismiss it and defame it. Don’t be so harsh for incorrect reasons. Not every movie can be a Nolan movie or a Godfather movie. There is place for Dabangg, Singham and Rowdy Rathore in this world. Please understand the same. If you were an artist, you would have known. It looks to me that you are just a rational third person analyst. That is fine. But where is the empathy for the artist that made this movie. Anyway, I still love to read your posts. I’m not an accomplished media personality as you but I’ve attempted to review this movie too. Please find time to read it and leave the comments (I would be more than honoured). True. Ture . True rajeev sir….. i truly respect ur review as it’s the real review of this silly movie……akshay kumar knows nothing about how to act…..his just cheating on public making a movie same as dabangg…..but unlike dabanggg it’s too bakwass….dabangg was atleast digestible…..this movie is total crap……some silly akshay kumar fans r comenting sh**…..some newspaper paid by AK had so silly reviews like giving his movie a 3.5 star…..i mean i watched this movie n i was angry like hell after looking at those reviews paid by the actor himself…..but ur review is the best truly i felt the same frustration after seeing this movie

  16. venkat says:

Rajeev, your critical views is for the internet people but for laborores or the daily wages, it is entertainment, you should be able to judge a movie if it will hit the front benchers or be a total flop..
I hope next time you write a review you be clear whether the readers of your review can watch or not? whenever you give low rating it has invariable given the producers his money back and maybe more so..
Please tell me if am wrong on the above statement…
The tamil version was also a super Hit.. now when you go back to all the movies dished out by the English or hindi movies in the 70s and 80s it was all just entertainment without any logic….The Hollywood did it in style that is all the difference is.

  17. Rahul says:

Pure 101% shit of the top class.. Well Akki movies..

  18. laugh@badfilm says:

    sincere critic
1 star bhi kyu diya bhai !!!!!!!!!!!

  19. Indian audience is losing taste for the movies, now the war is between fans more than the content, that’s a disaster to our film industry. There should be a group of people who make quality movies, not quantity movies, and Bhansali should definitely be out of it, it feels like he wasn’t the same man anymore, the movies Khamoshi and HDDCS are tagged to him.

  20. somesh says:

    hi sir…
why your ratings always go wrong…..? you gave 1 star and the movie has already collected 130 crores. stands at 4th position in overall box office list. I follow ur reviews so please give fair reviews by keeping class and mass audience in mind…

  21. VJ says:

I generally follow your advice before deciding on watching a movie, as my risk of watching a bad movie is covered. However I had not read your review for this movie & watched it the other day. I agree with all your comments of it being a no brainer, but it still was very entertaining. I guess rajeeev you need to relax more, be less rigid & understand that we go to a theater to let our hair down & enjoy. I think we need to look at the movie as a whole & not technicalities.
Hope I have not missed out on any good entertaining movie after reading your review. But among the rest, you are the best unbiased reviewer i can think of…

  22. Preet says:

I admire the dedication and commitment you have for your job Rajeev. I can see no other reason why anyone would watch these movies. I’m planning to watch Arjun which I hope I enjoy, I was directed here by one of the comments on that page.

  23. Sachin says:

Rajeev your comments are the most honest and right from the heart..Rowdy Rathore is just crazy, stupid movie. I wonder why the hell bollywood is being served the most shitty stuff from down south..
