Toonpur Ka Superrhero

Rating: 1.5

December 24, 2010

Cast: Ajay Devgan, Kajol, Tanuja, Sanjay Mishra, Mukesh Tiwari

Director: Kireet Khurana

An incomprehensible voice-over by Sanjay Dutt in the opening sequence of Toonpur Ka Superrhero is meant to introduce us to the key characters of this dull live action-meets-animation film. Ajay Devgan is a movie-star named Aditya who is kidnapped and transported into the cartoon world, where he must help the good toons, or the Devtoons, overthrow the evil ones, called the Toonasurs. Aditya, for his part, sees this as an opportunity to win over his own son, who is unimpressed by the fact that his father needs a stunt double to perform those daring action scenes in his films.

Directed by Kireet Khurana, Toonpur Ka Superrhero suffers on account of its embarrassing lack of imagination. Virtually every single animated character is a stereotype, including the Gujarati housewife Big Ben, a music-obsessed fat-guy named Gappi, a Hindi movie-crazy sardar boy named Bolly, and the villain’s voluptuous moll Monica. The film’s humour too is of pedestrian standards, not much different from Devgan’s own Golmaal comedies.

Despite the occasionally impressive animation, Toonpur Ka Superrhero is an ordeal to sit through because it has neither the visual wizardry nor the engaging storytelling that recent films like How To Train Your Dragon and Toy Story 3 have allowed us to embrace. Even if our local animation films can’t look as slick as their American counterparts, there’s no excuse for sloppy writing and singularly unimpressive characters.

I’m going with one-and-a-half out of five for director Kireet Khurana’s Toonpur Ka Superrhero. It’s a solid waste of time, and I won’t insist that you subject your kids to this!

Why is ajay devgan single handedly trying to destroy Kajol’s career?? She is an icon.. i mean comeON get over the fact that she makes more money than u!

When someone quizzed Ajay on whether Indians can make a Pixar in BH chat , he said he’ll get the answer after watching Toonpur Ka Superhero. I don’t think he needs to watch the movie to get the answer.

Toonpur Ka Superhero great movie. TKS is a sign of India shinning while TMK is a shine of bollywood sinking. What’s wrong with Rajeev masand?. Just check last 10 years he did not appreciate any single film by Ajay Devgn. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam to Once upon a time in Mumbai.

  6. ravi says:

Rajeev dude .. do u even know how much it takes to make such movie? well when person like Max Howard says TKS matches international standard we dont need your view (you know Max na?)

it is a solid waste of time.this movie is a ripoff of the movie with micheal jordan and the cartoons bugs bunny and daffy duck.you dont need to be a brainer to understand that.

I knw exactly wats the problem with Mr.Rajeev i think he compares our movies with hollywood movies.Which is simply ridiculous because watching 60percent hindi movies is like watching forged, manipulated version of a foreign language movie. If any body who is used to watching foreign movies it will be difficult for them to watch the forged version in hindi. If you have seen genuine movies like LSD (which had innovative content) received a 4star from Rajeev.

rajeev what is happening to u? why r u comparing TKS with how to train d dragon?neither dragon nor toy story has super stories. they had good narration and technique. what i am saying is, it will take time for bolly to get a LION KING, but dont discourage.

    Thanks Rajeev,

I was laughing all over the comments as it seems we have the failure of this film trying to be hidden behind the curtains of “make India proud “, “Ajay devgan rocks” and blah blah blah…..

Thanks for saving me from the ordeal of watching the movie I think Ajay is on the rocks and India needs a lot more to catch up with Hollywood.

Dear Rajeev you claim to be yourself a film critic it doesnt mean you say all bullshit . How many film you have directed ching none right. You have already all big mouth critics who made film doesnt upto the mark when they are making film but they can criticize others very well. Indian cinema is growing like anything atleast start appreciating what we are trying i am not saying you promote bad film but atleast you should appreciate their hardwork atleast they are trying to make something different from regular.sorry but be fare & geniune

  15. shankha Mukherjee says:

Rajeev please dont compare our movies with Hollywood movies it doesnt make sense. you are talking like you are still under the influence of Hollywood i think you should know the basic diference Yes they are good ,we are not bad either i saw according 2 u every hollywood is gr8 & bollywood suffers Why plz try to improve & if you have courage make a Hindi movie by yourself then let us give you rating then you will understand the hardwork.Rgrds Shankha

  16. PS says:

Rajeev you might be right with your review but I notice one thing for a long time which I have to say right now.

Firstly, you cannot have the best movie you’ve ever seen (in each genre) as a benchmark. If you do so then almost all the movies fail to meet that standard. One has to be realistic about yardstick to compare, one should start from 50% ( let’s say average) and rate products on the basis of better or worse than average.

Secondly, you are a movie critic, you must have seen a lot of movies but you should also take into account that for so may people such movies would be a first experience. Comparing it with HTTYD or Toy Story is bit harsh on TKS.

Thirdly, I’m not into making-India-proud kinda BS but still Rome hasn’t been built in a day. There would be few failures, few average movies before we make a good one, give them some time-some breathing space.

this is not about discouraging bollywood or anything like that. its about how good a movie is. nobody has the time and money to encourage people who keep on making poor movies. movie making is a serious business but its aim is to deliver good quality original movies. if a movie is bad; its bad. what is the point in saying that the makers tried hard to make it good and that is enough reason to go and watch a bad movie.
